Gasa sa Gugma Home for the Dying Destitutes in Cebu

Run by the Missionaries of Charity (the Sisters of Mother Teresa of Calcutta), Gasa sa Gugma Home for the Dying Destitutes, as its name suggests, is really for the elderly who are so poor and who do not have relatives and families to care for them. It is a home for the aged, dyingand abandoned. If those three words alone won’t melt your heart, I don’t know what will. Can you imagine being old, dying and abandoned?

The grandmas and grandpa here are mostly in wheelchairs. When the team visited, a lot of them were slumped on their seats, seemingly tired. But you can tell from their faces that they were happy to have us around even for just a few minutes.

As this institution relies mostly on donations, a lot of Cebuanos send them goods in the form of clothing or food, to help out their situation.

Location

Gasa sa Gugma is located at Cabantan Street, Barrio Luz, in Mabolo, Cebu City. Not everybody knows where it is as it can easily be missed. However, a few taxi drivers do know the place. The best way to get there would be to take a taxi or your own private vehicle. Please note that the place is in Mabolo, surrounded by Ayala Business Park, Carmelite Monastery, Pope John XXIII Seminary and behind Keppel Center. It is not located in a conspicuous location, however.

These grandmas and grandpas would appreciate cash donations or even donations in the form of soft foods such as oatmeal, banana, rice or porridge; shirts, shorts and slippers; or even soaps, shampoo and other items needed for hygiene. Towels, tissue paper and the like would also be appreciated.
