A Visit to the Cebu Archdiocesan Shrine of Saint Pedro Calungsod
These days, stress and emotional turmoil don’t seem new to anyone. Everyone has it every now and then. Coping with it is a personal thing. However, it pays to know that there’s also another place in the city center where one can feel the solace and presence of the Almighty. This is the Cebu Archdiocesan Shrine of Saint Pedro Calungsod.Often called as “Calungsod Shrine”, this is located at Archbishop’s Residence Compound, D. Jakosalem Street Cebu City. It has been standing since 2002. It’s right beside Sacred Heart Church and somewhat at the back portion of Casino Espanol. To get to this place, you need to do a little walking since no jeepneys pass by its front gate area—only private cars and taxis. You can hop in jeepneys that pass by Zapatera area near Ramos or at the General Maxilom Avenue area on the other end to get nearer to the place. But again, it entails a little walking after. You can think of it as a little sacrifice prior to entering the Holy Shrine of Saint Calungsod.
This sacred place is open daily, starting at 4pm. It has enough parking spaces for cars and also has a guard house by the gate. Many plants and trees surround the area, adding to its calming aura. By the gate, you’ll already have a glimpse of the shaded façade of the church. Its front is rather simple but its interior design is really magnificent though it’s not that spacious as a regular church in the city. Holy images are well-designed and positioned. In one end of the church, carved figures of Mama Mary, Senior Santo Nino and San Pedro Calungsod are within reach for church goers. Really, you can feel the holiness of the place. If you are lucky, you might find yourself to be the only visitor in one time wherein you can really have a time with Him without any distractions. This is really my go-to-place when I need spiritual encouragement. On one side of the shrine, there’s also a place where you can lit small candles at 1 PHP each. Do note that special Masses and wedding anniversary masses are arranged with the rector.
