Alegria came from Spanish word “Alegre” which means happy and cheerful. By the time, Spaniards discovered the springs located in this area they shouted “Que Alegria!” and then, the place was called Alegria.

In 2015 census, there are 23,300 people live in this area. It is also belongs to the 4th income class by the help of the Alegria Oil Field onshore.

History of Alegria
Source: cebudailynews.inq.netThe town was one of the Barrio's of Municipality of Tuburan but became an official town in April 3, 1950 and having 9 barangays ( Compostela, Guadalupe, Legaspi, Lepanto, Madridejos, Montpeller, Poblacion, Sta. Filomena, Valencia).
Alegria was the first provincial town that has an onshore oil field located in Brgy. Montpeller, the Alegria Oil Field Polyard-3 Well. It is operated and constructed by China International Mining Petroleum Corporation Ltd. and occupies the 197,000 hectares.
The production started this 2018, in President Rodrigo Duterte administration and produced oil is available only for the Philippine market.

Are you curious why many of Cebu waterfalls has “Can” in third names? It was a word that refers to the owners like “Kang Calanog” which was shortened into “Cancalanog”.
Cancalanog Falls
This fall is located in Brgy. Compostela. If you choose to walk by foot from the Highway, it'll consume your 30 minutes but know that it's worthy it! No buildings in the city could compare the relaxing nature you'll experience.
Canlaob Falls
This one has also beautiful pools located in Brgy. Sangi, Alegria.
Cambais Falls
This is situated in Brgy. Guadalupe, the falls offers you a curtain-like waterfall and has 5 different drops that you can trail with adventures!
Saint Francis Xavier Parish
Source: commons.wikipedia.orgThe church was built in March 13, 1857. It faces the Heritage Park and Negros Island. The annual feast celebration is held every December.
December 2006, when local officials implemented the “Kawayan Festival” in honor of St. Francis Xavier and showcasing the town's local produced Kawayan (Bamboo).

Yes, it is the most significant landmark in the Municipality. The Baluarte (watchtower) was built around 1800’s.
